Walthamstow has a lot of makers. Furniture, print, food, small manufacturing, most of it in old industrial buildings around Blackhorse Lane and Wood Street. When the workshop fills up the choice is a bigger workshop or somewhere to put the stock.
The yard is at 94 Vale Road, N4 1PZ, about five miles across. A 20ft or 40ft container works as a stock room you can drive a van into, and the gate opens on your own PIN at any hour.
A stock room without a second workshop
Renting more workshop space to hold boxes is expensive. A container costs a fraction of it and you are not paying for a roller shutter you use twice a week. Ground floor units let you reverse up to the doors, and the yard has parking while you load.
Households use the smaller sizes. Walthamstow terraces have a bit more room than a flat in Zone 2 but nothing spare during a loft conversion or an extension. A 10ft holds a couple of rooms and a 20ft holds a three bedroom house.
Parking is part of it too. Vans, cars and trade vehicles can stay inside the gated yard all day from £10, terms and conditions apply, so a maker doing a delivery run can leave the vehicle while they pack.
